Microsoft Edge Gets NewsGuard Tool to Flag Fake News Sites

Microsoft Edge is warning users not to trust certain news websites as part of a feature designed to fight fake news and misleading information.

Visitors to such websites who use Edge will be told the “website generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability” and “has been forced to pay damages in numerous high-profile cases” - if the latter is true. Edge is using tech by a startup called NewsGuard, which tells users when a site regularly publishes content that has damaged reputations, caused widespread alarm, or constituted harassment or invasion of privacy.

NewsGuard also gives news websites a trustworthiness score. It is run by experienced news professionals and manually checks whether sites meet a certain set of journalistic standards. Sites can also improve their standards and get a higher score so that NewsGuard editors can remove the flag.
